The Eastern Cape Socio Economic Consultative Council (ECSECC) in collaboration with Microsoft South Africa held a webinar on 29 March 2022 to workshop community radios on digital skills to propel innovation in the sector. The free digital skills initiative has come about as the result of a partnership between Microsoft SA and the Eastern Cape Provincial Government. Eastern Cape community radios play an important role of delivering relevant information to communities in indigenous languages that directly impacts their lives. Digital penetration in the Eastern Cape has enabled community radios to expand their coverage and reach a broader audience outside their original reach. Many radio stations are also uploading their content on various digital platforms to be accessed by people outside the borders of the Eastern Cape who want to stay informed about local issues. The Microsoft Virtual Innovation Hub has free courses that will help community radio staff grow their skills in content creation, e commerce, network and digital marketing, social media marketing, graphic design and data analytics to give them a competitive edge.
Speakers at the event were Andile Lunga Stofile who is Government and Corporate Affairs Lead at Microsoft South Africa, Baphelele Mhlaba, head of Khawuleza PMO and Xola Nozewu, manager of the Eastern Cape Community Radio Forum (ECRF).
