The Chief Executive Officer of the Eastern Cape Socio-Economic Consultative Council, Mr Luvuyo Mosana has welcomed with excitement the Eastern Cape Grade 12 results of the Class of 2024.  The Class of 2024 shattered the record of 81.4% set by the Class of 2023 by 3.58% to attain an impressive 84.98%.

Mr Mosana said: "The outstanding matric results of the Class of 2024 are a significant milestone which reflects our learners’ hard work and dedication and is a testament to the resilience of our educators, parents, and communities, who have supported our learners throughout their journey.”

He added that the improvement in the quality of the matric results in the past five years demonstrates that the Eastern Cape is on the right path to transforming the quality of education in the Eastern Cape. More importantly, it underscores the effectiveness of targeted education interventions, especially in previously underperforming districts.

Mr Mosana encouraged learners to choose careers that would equip them with knowledge and skills of the future so that they can be employable or become entrepreneurs.  "The provincial economy needs skills in the growth frontiers of smart agriculture, digital economy, ocean economy, future of manufacturing and sustainable energy.”

Announcing the matric results in an event to honour Eastern Cape Top Achievers, Eastern Cape Premier, Mr Oscar Mabuyane said he was proud to announce that the province increased the number of Bachelor passes from 30.01% in 2020 to 45.78% in 2024. "This gives more learners access to opportunities in higher education,” he said.

The Eastern Cape also made telling advances in critical gateway subjects. Mathematics pass rate rose from 39.7% in 2020 to 62.2% in 2024, marking a significant leap in one of the most challenging yet essential subjects. The pass rate in physical sciences increased from 55.6% to 75.2% over the same period, equipping more learners with the foundation for careers in science, technology, and engineering. Notably, the pass rate for Life Sciences has reached 83.0%, reflecting the progress in STEM education.

Premier Mabuyane said these achievements are crucial for the Eastern Cape provincial economy and align with the provincial strategy of developing a skilled workforce to drive industrial growth, innovation, and economic competitiveness.

He said the Eastern Cape was closing the Equity Gap in education with significant improvement in Quintile 1 and 2 schools, which represent some of the most disadvantaged communities in the Eastern Cape.

  • Quintile 1 schools increased their pass rate from 64.9% in 2020 to 85.5% in 2024, showing that no learner is left behind with the right resources and support.
  • Quintile 2 schools also improved from 65.6% to 84.8%, signaling a commitment to equitable education.

Premier Mabuyane said this progress demonstrates that government investment in rural education infrastructure, teacher development, and learner support has begun to yield tangible results. He committed his government to continue prioritising these interventions to close the performance gap further and ensure that every child, regardless of background, has access to quality education.

Premier Mabuyane urge education stakeholders in the Eastern Cape to continue making a difference by supporting teachers and learners.
