A jubilant Eastern Cape Premier, Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane has today told more than 1000 delegates attending the Eastern Cape the 18th Annual ICT Summit in East London that the Eastern Cape Government established a Data Centre at the Eastern Cape Socio-Economic Consultative Council (ECSECC) to realise its objective of becoming a data driven province.
The ICT summit brings together under one roof government, ICT industry leaders, scholars and entrepreneurs to discuss challenges and opportunities in the ICT space.
Premier Mabuyane said the establishment of the data centre at ECSECC showcases the commitment of the Eastern Cape government in developing its infrastructure to contribute to the ever evolving information and communication technology sector. He said his government wants to use data to support decision making and policy formulation.
"The data centre at ECSECC is functional and has already been instrumental in tracking spending and implementation of infrastructure projects in the Province. We are now using it to analyse the issue of child malnutrition in the province.”
Premier Mabuyane said the Province is also moving with speed in facilitating technology-led industrial upgrading which will see the attraction and retention of new technology in the province. He cited the East London IDZ as a leading entity in attracting ICT equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to manufacture for the local and export market.
The Acting Chief Operations Officer of the ELIDZ, Ms Ayanda Ramncwana said concurred with Premier Mabuyane adding that the ELIDZ "is working hard to attract of ICT Service Providers, undersea cable operators and other clientele to take advantage of its excellent infrastructure to ensure security of institutional data and records.”
Premier Mabuyane also updated delegates on progress made in the implementation of the Broadband Project.
"As at end of September out of the 2700 planned sites for connectivity, 1975 broadband sites were connected through fiber, with the remaining 725 sites to be completed by 31 March 2025. That is 4,335km of Fibre installed in our communities.”
He urge leaders of municipalities to sensitize communities about the importance of connectivity infrastructure to contain vandalism and theft. Premier Mabuyane also commended network providers Vodacom and MTN for making massive investment on telecommunications infrastructure to enable connectivity in Eastern Cape rural areas.
